Do You DIY?

I've spent the weekend so far hitting Home Depot, Gracious Home and Janovic Plaza for the supplies to makeover my apartment and now I can't wait to get started! I love getting my hands dirty and doing things myself, probably because I'm a perfectionist and an Aries. I also grew up in a house with parents who stripped and hung wallpaper, painted and renovated all by themselves so I know what I'm doing. The Bachelor was amazed that I could repair the hole under the tv myself when all it took was a little spackle, sanding and painting. But then he grew up in Manhattan with maids so that might be why.

Oh, and I choose Benjamin Moore Cedar Key (OC-16) the top left color for my living room walls. It was actually one of the colors I almost chose for the Bachelor Pad. I liked some of the others but they were either too grey or too dark or looked like liquid make-up. The space is small so it needed to be a little lighter. First though, I have to strip the yucky trim. Not really sure I am excited to do that myself but it will be worth it in the end! So how many of you DIY (do it yourself)?

DORMITORIOS PARA NINOS: COMO COMPARTIR EL ESPACIO

Que les parece... cuando a la famila se hace numerosa los niños deben compartir el cuarto con el hermanito.
Se hace un poco dificultoso cuando hay que tenerun cuarto más para el otro niño, sobre todo si no hay mucho espacio. Por ello esta forma de dormitorio con dos camas, nos ayudará mucho para poder compartir en mismo cuanto con los niños. Las camas nido o las literas son más prácticas, puesto que permiten desarrollar más actividades en el dormitorio, además de dormir con comodidad.

A veces los niños que comparten el cuarto son de distinta edad, y cada uno tendrá gustos y necesidades diferentes, por lo que debemos tener la posibilidad de crear espacios independientes para cada uno de ellos, orientar las camas en direcciones distintas o colocarlas en diferente nivel de altura, nos ayuda a crear una sensación de separación de la zona que corresponde a cada niño.


También podemos poner a cada una de las camas complementos distintos como: sabanas de colores, cubrecamas, cojines, etc. a gusto de cada uno de los niños. Para que así cada una de ellas se adapte a la personalidad de su dueño, colores, estampados diversos, cuadros, posters, pegatinas, alfombras, tapizones, lámparas, etc. la de su elección en su zona de pared. Todas estas ayudan a crear decoraciones variadas para caracteres claramente diferenciados.
Quivir nos da propuestas de soluciones para cuartos infantiles son especialmente detallistas, en mueblerías nos muestran composiciones que separan además de la cama, la zona de estudio, ya que cada niño requerirá de un espacio adecuado para la realización de sus tareas escolares cotidianas y es bueno que no interfieran uno en el trabajo del otro durante el tiempo dedicado a los deberes.

CLOSETS PARA NINOS Y JOVENES

Los closets son muy importantes y exclusivos en los dormitorios o habitaciones de los niños, porque de esta forma se tendrá mas ordenada la ropa de los niños ya que en esa eddad ellos tienen cada vez más ropa que los adultos. Así tambien desde pequeños aprenden los buenos hábitos de orden y limpieza, que dispongan de un espacio bien distribuido donde organizar sus prendas, complementos y accesorios personales.
Así de puede habilitar un rincón en una de las paredes del cuarto para tal efecto, en caso de no disponer de una habitación independiente, al igual que en los vestidores de mayores es importante lograr una combinación adecuada de colgadores, estantes y cajones.

La línea Sauder tiene varias propuestas interesantes para vestidores en cuartos infantiles, se basan en partir inicialmente el espacio en dos alturas, en la zona inferior colocamos los cajones y en la superior las estanterías, los colgadores se distribuyen entre los dos niveles, no es necesario que el conjunto sea simétrico, de hecho la asimetría le aporta un toque informal interesante.

Habitually Chic Redecorates

I'm blaming Brilliant Asylum for my overwhelming need to redecorate my apartment. I had already been thinking about it after seeing Domino editor Tori Mellott's new apartment in the September 2008 issue but then Brilliant Asylum posted about Eddie Ross from Top Design and Martha Stewart and that was it...once I saw all the photos on his blog (see below) I knew I was a goner. You know that old saying that the cobbler's children have no shoes? I don't want to be the interior designer with the less than chic apartment! That's worse than a hairdresser with bad hair! There really is no excuse!

Like Tori's old apartment, my current one has a lot of color but it's really not feeling cohesive or as sophisticated as I would like so I've come up with a plan...landlord and security deposit be damned! I'm going to paint all the walls a grey/taupe color (similar to the bachelor pad), finally strip and paint over the honey colored shiny wood trim in Benjamin Moore White Dove (wish I had done this when I moved in!), paint the front door a very high gloss deep dark brown (black won't really work), get rid of the chair that is too big for my living room (I kept it thinking I would want it if I ever moved. Two years later and I'm still here.), paint the television cabinet (not sure what color yet), cull my books (do I really need The Nanny Diaries? I think not.), find a glass and brass vintage two tier coffee table (anyone have one they want to get rid of?), rehang all my new art (I seem to have a small ebay addiction to buying vintage watercolors and abstract paintings), get control of my magazines and tear sheets (I hope I don't end up one of those people who die when their stack of magazines falls on them!), and start collecting more real china and hotel silver (darn you Eddie Ross for inspiring me!).

I also plan to do as much as I can on a budget so you can follow me to the flea markets and all my favorite thrift shops. Oh, and did I mention I'm not a morning person?! The early bird may get the worm but sometimes the afternoon flea marketer gets a better bargain. I'm sure there is no way I could beat Eddie Ross there anyway so there is no use in trying! A Different Kind of Girly

The last home was over the top feminine but this one is clean and white with a little girly pink thrown in. The homeowner, Pippa Holt, is a fashion editor in London and her home is a collection of objects she has collected over the years through her travels. The white floors and walls create a perfect plain background to make them pop too.
I love that she stacks her magazines under a lucite table just like Domino editor Tori Mellott did in her old apartment. I'm seeing a lot of Bertoia wire chairs around lately which are always a classic.

I love the mismatched chairs around the Biedermeier table.
The area rug from The Rug Company adds more color and shows there are different ways to be girly. For more, check out the March/April 2008 issue of Australian Vogue Living.

Operación : un hogar más agradable

Hace ya algún tiempo nos llegó a casa de manos familiares este antiguo banco de madera . Conseguimos quitarle varias manos de pintura a base de decaparlo y recuperamos su aspecto original .



La máquina de lijar hizo lo suyo y también el producto que necesitamos echar para combatir la carcoma que había ido dejando su huella dando un aspecto tan peculiar a este hermoso banco. Para mí es un pequeño gran tesoro que entonces servía como descanso en la cocina junto a la mesa camilla con brasero en una casita de pueblo segoviano.





El caso es que ha permanecido todo este tiempo con algún que otro cojín hasta que me cansé de verlo así y me propuse darle otro aire. El verano tiene ese poder en mi casa, cambia espacios haciéndolos más acojedores o al menos así lo intento.
Bien, pues has visto el antes y vas a ver el ahora.






Utilicé una tela de rayas que compré en la Couserie Creative en Perpignan y lienzo. Nada más. Algo de guata para hacer el relleno de las colchonetas para sentarse y apoyar la espalda. Un ratito de máquina de coser y costuras rectas.
La tela de rayas más finas que hay debajo es un mantel que compré este verano en Verdecora , así como los dos cojines que ya vienen acabados en la misma tienda.

Banco detalle

Me quedaron unos pocos centímetros del medio metro de tela roja, justo algunas rayas completas que me sirvieron para animar la tela de lienzo beige del respaldo y coserlas encima , hacia los extremos. Era también , una forma de romper tanto color liso y combinarlo con el asiento.



Para sujetar el respaldo , corté una de las rayas de los restos que me quedó e hice unas tiras que van anudadas.



Parece mentira que estas telas, siendo de sitios tan diferentes, vayan tan bien.



El cambio es sustancial y ahora todos quieres estar aquí sentados.

Por último quería darte otra idea .¿ Has visto el jarrón de flores junto al banco ?
El recipiente de cerámica lo compramos hace bastante en un pueblo segoviano y aunque es para contener aceitunas, ahora lo he "reciclado " como jarrón y centro de mesa. ¿ Las flores ? Son artificiales ¿ te lo crees ?Bueno las pequeñitas blancas sí son de verdad y además son muy olorosas.
Se me ocurrió mezclar flores artificiales ( estas de Verdecora también ) junto con hiedras y otras plantas de hoja de mi patio..... Es una pena tirar tanta rama cuando podo..... porque al fin y al cabo , flores no puedo tener todo el año , pero sí ramas que pueden hacer un bonito ramo... y junto a esas flores que me duran todo el año , disfruto un ramo como los de las revistas.




..........Y es que como en casa , no se está en ningún sitio .....

J'adore this decor!

I'm going to have to have multiple homes to deal with my multiple decorating loves. Usually, I like clean rooms with a mix of modern and antique furnishings but for some reason I LOVE this romantic and ridiculously girly home in New Orleans decorated by Hal Williamson that is featured in the October 2008 issue of House Beautiful. (Decorno also posted it about.) I usually don't even like pink but it's so dreamy and I think the modern art and photography cut down on the cuteness. It does kind of remind me of Laduree and the Hotel Ritz a little bit. If you don't subscribe to HB, definitely run to the newsstand to pick it up! You won't be disappointed!

Cheap Treat

One thing I will never give up in any economic downturn are my magazines! Even if you can't afford to redecorate, you can at least still be inspired and take notes for a future project! I picked up the October 2008 issue of Domino last night at one of their events and it's chock full of great ideas and pretty pictures. Sometimes it's the little things that can bring the greatest pleasure! And all for under $5!

Disfrutando de la amistad

Así empezaron de bien mis vacaciones, con este super regalazo que Silvia me envió por mi cumple justo antes de salir de viaje. ¡Menuda sorpresa !
Fue tan precipitado que no me dio tiempo a hacer un artículo ..... luego las vacaciones..... y ahora que ya está de vuelta , no he tardado en presumir de esta amistad.
Y es que la muy pillina ya tenía pensado regalármelo cuando estaba bordando este SAL. Aquí podéis leer el artículo cuando lo terminó.

Otros regalitos cayeron de sus manos y que podéis apreciar en la foto . ¡ Qué bien me cuida esta chica !





Ahí está con más detalle este quaker que ya está colgado junto a los otros. ¡ Esta colección va que chuta !
Bordado sobre ese lino Vintage Fonceé que tanto le gusta y esos hilos tintados en tonos azules tan típicos de este estilo.
Silvia escogió un marco que le va genial y un charm en forma de corazón que reza " Made with love" , justo al lado de mis iniciales ¡¡¡¡ ay ,que bonito !!!



Aunque ya queda lejos, y tuve la ocasión de darle las gracias entonces, quería hacerlo publicamente . No hay duda , sus iniciales junto a mi edad son el presagio de la amistad que nos aguarda. Queda un poco "repipi" .......pero yo lo siento así.

Cocooning

Decorno sparked a bit of controversy today with her letter to Wall Street which got me thinking about what happens to the interior design industry when times are tough. Many of my friends and clients work in finance and are already cutting back their budgets but they and other New Yorkers still want a comfortable place to come home to at the end of the night. In fact, when the world is scary out there like it was after September 11th, people end up spending more money on their decor because they are going out less and cocooning at home with friends and family.

Harsh economic times usually mean less custom work and over the top ridiculously expensive curtains and more pieces from places like Crate and Barrel, flea markets and eBay. There are also many wonderful thrift stores in New York who sell top notch furniture and art to benefit very worthwhile charities that you can usually find something without breaking the bank. But I'm curious, are any of you in design industry noticing a slowdown in projects or other repercussions of this financial crisis? What are you doing to weather the storm? Do you think this will lead to more restrained and subdued decorating?

Built In Chic

I'm not usually a fan of built-ins or cerused oak but for some reason, I really love this apartment. Built-ins are perfect in smaller spaces such as this one where every square foot has to work. It's also another great example of the more masculine designs that I'm drawn to.

The apartment was designed by Andrew Halliday and David Greer who are known for their "bespoke" millwork. The owner wanted cerused oak after seeing it used in libraries in France. It also warms up what could have been a cold glass box in a brand new building.

Of course, I love the wall of art which includes works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Cy Twombly among others. The art is separate but hung so it makes an even bigger piece of art.

The living and dining rooms are combined in one space and looks out on the new Hearst Tower and was published in House Beautiful.

I wish my bachelor could afford Hermes china! Maybe someday! The pattern here is Chain d'Ancre.

The oak in the study/guestroom is ebonized cerused oak and has a desk that lifts off to make room when the sofa bed is pulled out.

I love shagreen and the color orange so I especially love this desk that also has a lacquered interior. The orange was actually based on the orange of an Hermes box. Tres chic!

The vintage planes are from Bizarre Bazaar, this cool store near my apartment on East 65th Street. They always have interesting vintage items.

The built-ins continue into the bedroom where the other side are closets and the bed and side tables are also cerused oak.

The walls are all seagrass which I always love. It's great for adding color and texture if someone doesn't like pattern per se. The photo of The Beatles adds a fun touch of whimsy while the fur adds some serious luxury. Overall the space is simple but with really fabulous details that make it a stand out. I'm sure there will be some who don't like it but I hope they will appreciate the amount of design and work that went into it. The only problem with built-ins is that when the guy moves, he'll have no furniture!
